A Legacy of Art :

Journey of N Surya Arjun

I am N. Surya Arjun, the great-grandson of the celebrated artist N. Gopala Row, and a Marine Engineer by profession.

Growing up in a family renowned for its artistic legacy, I was surrounded by the vibrant creations of my ancestors, whose works were not only celebrated but also a source of inspiration. My childhood home was adorned with art on every wall, creating a surreal environment that sparked my passion for collecting art from around the globe.

Passion for Art

For the past 22 years, I have immersed myself in the world of art collection, driven by an unwavering enthusiasm. Each piece I acquire feels like a treasure, each with its own unique story waiting to be told. The quest for art is akin to an epic journey—one that fills my restless nights with purpose. The joy of finding a perfect piece brings me immense fulfillment, transcending mere happiness.

Early Influences

My love for art took root at a young age. Even as a child of 10, I was captivated by the vibrant colors of the paintings that adorned my family’s home, particularly those by my great-grandfather, N Gopala Row, and my great-granduncle, N V Reddi Naidu. Among these, two striking German prints by H. Clementz held a special fascination for me. Our home had dedicated spaces for showcasing family art, fostering an appreciation for the craft.

Personal Connection

In 1996, following a devastating cyclone that damaged our ancestral home, many artworks, including those of my great-grandfather, were relocated to Chennai for preservation. During my studies in the U.K., I requested an image of “Murali Krishna,” a painting by my great-grandfather, and was so inspired that I had it tattooed on my arm. This connection to his art has become a constant source of inspiration for me.

Art Collection Journey

My journey as an art collector began with the purchase of an oleograph titled “Sriman Narayana” in Pondicherry, where I first encountered a range of stunning prints. This sparked a passion that led me to explore antique shops, flea markets, and auctions around the world, from France and Germany to the U.S. and beyond. Each acquisition brought joy and fulfillment, driven by an insatiable desire to enrich my collection.

Challenges and Resilience

Throughout my travels, I encountered countless remarkable pieces, including a rare German print by the esteemed William Harring, which only heightened my appreciation for quality and craftsmanship. My love for oleographs blossomed as I delved deeper into my great-grandfather’s legacy, inspiring me to expand my collection beyond borders.

While my path has not always been smooth, the challenges only fueled my determination. My collection, which includes antique oil paintings and German prints, reflects a commitment to preserving the artistic heritage of my family. I believe that the quality of Gopala Row’s prints stands unparalleled; they are limited editions produced in Germany, making them treasures for any art lover fortunate enough to own them.

Mission and Philosophy

My mission now is to share the prestigious collection I’ve amassed with my country and fellow art enthusiasts, embodying the mantra, “Love what you do, do what you love.” My journey continues, driven by passion and a deep appreciation for the art that tells the stories of my heritage.

Conclusion

Overall, the profound impact of art on my life highlights how growing up in a family steeped in artistic legacy has shaped my identity and passions. This intersection of personal history and the quest for artistic appreciation invites readers to recognize the deep connection between art, identity, and legacy. My journey reflects not only a commitment to collecting art but also a dedication to honoring and sharing my rich familial heritage.
